Biography

Clare Elwell is a Professor in Medical Physics at University College London (UCL) and serves as the Vice Dean for Impact for the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. She received her BSc in Physics (Medical Physics) from the University of Exeter in 1988, followed by an MPhil in 1991, and completed her PhD at UCL in 1995, focusing on the application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure brain oxygenation and blood flow in adults. As the Director of the Near Infrared Spectroscopy Research Group within the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory at UCL, she holds honorary positions at University College London Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Her research encompasses the development of novel optical systems for monitoring and imaging the human body, with projects addressing autism, acute brain injuries, sports performance, and malnutrition-related brain development in children in rural Gambia. Clare is also involved in the Globalfnirs initiative aimed at supporting the application of NIRS in global health projects and leads the Brain Imaging Global Health (BRIGHT) project. Her work is supported by various funding bodies including the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Medical Research Council. She has received multiple accolades for her contributions to science communication and education.
