Biography

Professor Clare Mar-Molinero is an expert in Spanish sociolinguistics, with a focus on global Spanish, Spain, Mexico, and Latinx communities. She holds a BA from Birmingham University, an MA in Language & Linguistics, and a PhD in Politics of Language from the University of Southampton. Mar-Molinero has received a British Academy Small Award for her work on global Spanish and coordinates the AHRC Networks & Workshops award, collaborating with institutions from Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Ghent, and Tilburg to explore language, migration, and citizenship in Europe. She has also led a project analyzing the language experiences of migrant returnees in San Luís Potosí, Mexico, supported by Santander Universities Network. Her research additionally encompasses urban multilingualism, language policy, and the linguistic semiotic landscapes in the context of Mexico's diverse languages. Mar-Molinero has organized major conferences, including the Sociolinguistics Symposium in 2010 and various biennial conferences for the Association of Spanish Society Studies. Her ongoing work aims to address contemporary language policy issues in Mexico while framing discussions around language ideologies within a decolonizing global North-South context.
