Dr. Claudio Benzecry

Biography

Claudio E. Benzecry is a Professor of Communication Studies and Sociology (courtesy) at Northwestern University, where he also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the MTS PhD program. He has secondary appointments in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Integrated Program in Design and Technology. As a sociologist, his research focuses on the intersections of culture, arts, and knowledge in the context of globalization. He authored the book 'Opera Fanatic: Ethnography of an Obsession' (University of Chicago Press, 2011), which received the Mary Douglas Award for the best book in sociology and culture in 2012 and was an honorable mention for the ASA Distinguished Book Award in 2014. Benzecry has also edited volumes on theory, culture, and knowledge, particularly in Social Theory, in collaboration with Monika Krause and Isaac Reed (University of Chicago Press, 2017). His published work appears in prominent journals such as Sociological Theory and Culture & Society. Currently, he holds the position of co-editor-in-chief of 'Qualitative Sociology' and is working on a new book titled 'Perfect Fit: Creative Work in the Global Shoe Industry' which is based on five years of ethnographic research exploring design, production, and globalization in the shoe industry.
