Biography

Claudio Canizares is a University Professor and Hydro Endowed Chair in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (E&CE) Department at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He serves as the Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE). With a strong academic background, he received his Electrical Engineer degree from the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Ecuador in 1984, followed by a Master's degree (1988) and a PhD (1991) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on the stability, control, optimization, and simulation of bulk power systems, microgrids, and energy systems in the context of net-zero goals and competitive energy markets. Canizares has led significant research initiatives, securing over CAD 92 million in grants and contracts, and has supervised nearly 190 research fellows and graduate students. He has published 390 works, accumulating over 36,000 citations with an H-index of 86. He is a Fellow of several prestigious societies including the IEEE and the Royal Society of Canada, and has been recognized with numerous awards for his contributions to engineering education and research.
