Biography

Claudio Canizares is a University Professor and the Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy at the University of Waterloo. He received his Electrical Engineering degree from the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Ecuador in 1984 and obtained his MSc and PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1988 and 1991, respectively. His research focuses on the stability, control, optimization, modeling, and simulation of bulk power systems, microgrids, and energy systems within the context of net-zero energy and competitive markets. He has been instrumental in securing over CAD 92 million in research grants, supervising around 190 graduate students and research fellows, and has authored more than 390 publications that have garnered over 36,000 citations and an H-index of 86. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid and has held significant roles within the IEEE Power & Energy Society. Canizares has received multiple awards for his contributions to engineering education and research, including the IEEE PES Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award and the IEEE Canada Electric Power Medal. His leadership positions and active engagement in research and education reflect his commitment to advancing the field of electrical and computer engineering.
