Biography

Claudio F Grosman is a Professor and Head of the Molecular Integrative Physiology program at the University of Illinois. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of neurotransmitter-gated ion channels, with a specific emphasis on the nicotinic receptor superfamily. His laboratory employs single-channel ensemble electrophysiology and protein-engineering techniques to investigate the structure-function relationships of these ion channels. Recently, his work has concentrated on the quantitative characterization of the fundamental properties of neurotransmitter-gated ion channels, including kinetics, ligand binding, and conformational changes between closed and open states. Additionally, he explores the electrostatics of the pore domain and how these properties relate to physiological and pathological conditions affecting postsynaptic current decay. Grosman has earned numerous accolades for his excellence in teaching and advising, including the Faculty Excellence Award and Outstanding Advisor for the Medical Scholars Program.
