Biography

Dr. Claudio Toma is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer and a Senior Research Officer at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA). His scientific career is focused on understanding the genetic contributions to a range of complex psychiatric disorders across multiple prestigious institutions in Europe and Australia. He currently leads projects investigating novel candidate genes implicated in bipolar disorder and autism utilizando high-throughput genetic technologies. Dr. Toma joined the group of Prof. Anthony Monaco at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at the University of Oxford to study the functional aspects of the dyslexia-associated KIA00319 gene. He obtained his Ph.D. from Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna in 2009 under the supervision of Prof. Elena Maestrini and Prof. Anthony Monaco, focusing on autism susceptibility genes within the context of major international consortia. Dr. Toma has authored over 30 research articles in top-ranked journals such as Nature Genetics and Molecular Psychiatry, accumulating more than 2,300 citations, and has attracted $3M in funding as a Chief Investigator. He has presented at over 40 national and international congresses and has successfully supervised and mentored Ph.D. and Master's honor students from the Universities of Bologna, Barcelona, and UNSW.
