Biography

Claudio Vellutini joined the UBC School of Music in 2016 as an Associate Professor of Musicology. He holds a Ph.D. in Music History and Theory from the University of Chicago, earned in 2015. His research interests center around cultural reception history, specifically focusing on nineteenth-century Italian opera and its dissemination within the Austrian Empire. Vellutini has published essays in notable journals such as the Journal of the American Musicological Society, Cambridge Opera Journal, and 19th-Century Music. He is also the author of "Entangled Histories: Opera Cultural Exchange Between Vienna and the Italian States During the Napoleonic Era," set to be published by Oxford University Press in 2025. In 2018, he received the SSHRC Insight Development Grant to support his research. Vellutini has earned several accolades including the 2012 Indiana University Press Award and the Alvin H. Johnson AMS 50 Dissertation Fellowship. Besides his academic roles, he actively collaborates with various opera houses and music festivals, contributing essays and program notes for organizations such as the Salzburg Festival and Teatro Real in Madrid. Before joining UBC, he was a Post-Doctoral Resident Scholar and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University Bloomington.
