Dr. Clayton Childress

Biography

Clayton Childress is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2012. His research primarily focuses on cultural sociology, exploring topics such as cultural production, reception, and the processes that shape taste and decision-making within markets. He is the Chair-Elect of the Culture Section of the American Sociological Association and serves on editorial boards for several academic journals including Poetics and Contemporary Sociology. Childress has received notable awards including the Mary Douglas Prize for his book on sociology and culture in 2018 and the McGuffey Award in 2022. His academic publications cover a range of peer-reviewed articles and monographs that investigate the intersections of culture, inequality, and decision-making. Moreover, he has edited volumes and textbooks, contributing to the discourse on media and society. His research projects employ diverse methodological approaches to analyze how cultural objects generate social arrangements and configurations of inequality.
