Biography

Clemens Possnig completed his Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Karl-Franzens University Graz, Austria, followed by a Master’s degree at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna. His academic interests in economic theory were sparked during his time in Vienna, where he was inspired by his supervisor to pursue a PhD. After completing his Master's in 2016, he moved to Vancouver to work on his PhD at the University of British Columbia, where he realized that he could combine his interests in game theory and econometrics to study algorithmic game theory. In 2023, he joined the Department of Economics at the University of Waterloo. Possnig's research focuses on the economic impacts of algorithmic learning in society, employing tools from game theory, statistics, and simulations to study strategic situations involving algorithms. His recent work explores how firms use algorithms and pricing bots in competitive environments, as well as the econometric theory of network-dependence. He has collaborated with coauthors on providing simple inference testing procedures for network-dependent panel data and examining the interaction between bank-firm relationships and performance in Spain.
