Biography

Prof. Clemens Thielen specializes in the field of Discrete Optimization with a focus on modeling and solving optimization problems, particularly in networks using approximation algorithms and multiobjective parametric optimization. His research has practical applications in various sectors, including solving optimization problems for hospitals and staff scheduling for physicians. Prof. Thielen completed his studies in mathematics at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and the University of Cambridge in the UK, where he received his PhD in mathematical optimization in 2010. He worked in the Department of Mathematics at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern and held a postdoctoral position from 2013 to 2019, before becoming a junior professor. In October 2019, he was appointed to the Professorship in Complex Networks at the TUM Campus Straubing and, as of August 2024, holds the position of Professor of Optimization and Sustainable Decision Making. He has received multiple awards including the Bavarian Climate Protection Prize in 2025 and the EURO Prize for Common Good in 2024, awarded by the Association of European Operational Research Societies.
