Clement Furlong received his B.A. in Chemistry from San Jose State College in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis in 1968. He conducted postdoctoral research at Cornell University focusing on bacterial ABC transporters and periplasmic substrate binding proteins. In 1970, he joined the faculty of the Biochemistry Department at the University of California, Riverside, before moving to the University of Washington in 1977. Furlong has held several roles, including Research Associate Professor and Professor of Medical Genetics and Genome Sciences, and has been active in research on gene/environment interactions, particularly the role of paraoxonase family genes in oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease risk. He has developed mouse models to validate these interactions and mass spectrometric protocols for biomarker analysis. Over the years, his contributions have significantly advanced the understanding of pharmacogenetics and the effects of organophosphate exposure in various biological contexts.
