Professor Cliff Hughes AO is the Immediate Past President of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua) and a Chair of the Board Accreditation Council ISQua. He is a professor focused on Patient Safety and Clinical Quality at Macquarie University. Previously, Hughes was a cardiothoracic surgeon and Chief Executive of the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission, a role he held for ten years. He has published extensively in the fields of cardiothoracic surgery and quality safety, and is a recipient of the Alumni Award from the University of New South Wales. He was also made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2014, having graduated from the University of New South Wales with a Doctor of Science. In 2015, he was awarded the Sir Hugh Devine Medal by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Hughes serves as a board member of the Medstar Institute for Quality and Safety in Washington DC, and is an advisor for the Policy Roundtable on Quality Health Services. He is also a Consultant for Quality Safety at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and a Visiting Professor at Imperial College in London. Notably, he is a founding member of ISQua’s International Academy for Quality and Safety in Health Care. In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Hughes has a passion for railways and is a qualified steam train driver at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex, UK.
