Dr. Clio Harper

Biography

Clio Harper, M.D., is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Dell Medical School. A native of Nashville, Tennessee, she graduated with honors in molecular biology from Vanderbilt University before obtaining her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1988. Harper completed her residency in ophthalmology at Charity Hospital, Louisiana State University, and subsequently held a prestigious two-year fellowship at the Casey Eye Institute, University of Oregon, where she received specialty training in medical and surgical retina, specifically in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. Since joining Austin Retina in 1995, she has garnered a national reputation as a speaker on the management of retinopathy of prematurity and the role of nutrition in macular degeneration. Harper is actively involved in research focused on pharmacological and nutritional therapies for the treatment and prevention of macular degeneration and has served as an investigator in several clinical trials. Additionally, she is committed to providing high-quality ophthalmic care internationally, having traveled to places like Haiti and China to teach and perform surgeries. In 2016, she founded Small World Vision, an organization aimed at eliminating preventable blindness in premature babies born in underserved regions. Harper is a member of various professional associations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Texas Medical Association.
