Biography

Cody Groat is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Indigenous Studies Program at Western University. A Kanyen'kehaka (Mohawk) band member of Six Nations Grand River, Groat's lineage traces back to mid-1700s. His academic background includes a PhD in History from Wilfrid Laurier University (2023) and a Master's in World Heritage Studies from the University of Birmingham (2017). Groat's research focuses on Indigenous cultural heritage, exploring themes of commemoration, preservation, and stewardship as they relate to archaeological sites and documentary heritage. His work also examines access to information policies in Canada and the United States, particularly regarding the Sixties Scoop and Indian Residential School System. He is currently funded by the SSHRC Insight Development Grant for a project entitled 'Kayanerekó:wa, Indigenous Identity, Intergenerational Haudenosaunee Histories' (2024-2026), which critically addresses legislation concerning Indigenous identity and sovereignty. Groat serves on editorial boards for journals such as Canadian Studies and Ontario History, and is recognized for advocating Indigenous perspectives in public history.
