Biography

Coen van Solingen is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine. His research interests focus on the role of non-coding RNAs in inflammation and vascular biology. Non-coding RNAs, once considered nonfunctional 'junk DNA,' have been shown to play crucial roles in regulating gene functions associated with health and disease. His graduate research on miRNA-126 highlighted the importance of microRNAs in controlling angiogenesis and inflammation. His postdoctoral training further explored the regulatory roles of microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs in lipid metabolism and inflammation. Ongoing studies aim to identify the functional roles of non-coding RNAs, particularly less-studied transcripts known as transcripts with unknown coding potential (TUCPs). TUCPs are a large group of RNA transcripts currently annotated as non-coding, yet they have small open reading frames coding for micropeptides with significant biological activities. Recent identification and characterization of TUCPs add an additional layer of complexity to the proteome, contributing to the understanding of the 'microproteome' and its potential regulatory functions.
