Dr. Coleman Hutchison

Biography

Coleman Hutchison is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin specializing in nineteenth- and twentieth-century U.S. literature and culture, American poetry, and print culture. His research focuses on the cultural biography of American literature during pivotal historical moments, such as the American Civil War and its aftermath, with particular emphasis on literary representations from the U.S. South. Hutchison is the author of "Apples and Ashes: Literature, Nationalism, and the Confederate States of America" and has edited significant publications like "The Cambridge Companion to Literature and the American Civil War". Throughout his twenty years of teaching, he has received numerous accolades, including the UT System Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award and the President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award. Coleman also directs the English Honors Program and teaches various courses that explore themes of Southern literature and American cultural memory in relation to historical texts and movements, such as works by William Shakespeare and Faulkner. He is actively involved in ongoing research projects examining the intersections of race, place, and poetry in American literature.
