Dr. Colin Eddie

Biography

Colin Eddie is an expert in the design and construction of tunnels in underground spaces, with 38 years of experience in the tunneling industry. He possesses an intimate working knowledge of current practices in tunnel design and construction, which includes detailed knowledge of temporary and permanent construction methodologies. He has managed an active research and development program and is personally responsible for introducing innovations that have been credited with improving safety, efficiency, and quality on major projects. In 2011, he led the launch of the MSc in Tunnelling and Underground Space at Warwick University, actively supporting the course as a member of the Industrial Advisory Panel. In 2005, Colin was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and in 2015, he was further honored with the appointment as Royal Academy Visiting Professor in Innovation in Tunnelling at the University of Warwick. In 2014, the UK Institution of Civil Engineers awarded him the John Mitchell Gold Medal in recognition of his significant contributions to tunneling. Colin has served as an engineering director in the UK's largest tunneling firm and formed his own consultancy business in June 2017, overseeing the management of a specialist underground engineering department. Throughout his twenty-year career, he has managed the implementation of £2.5bn worth of tunneling projects and developed a passion for integrating design and construction, leading a “Safe Design” culture that aims to improve safety and promote efficiency in world-class engineering.
