Colin Filer holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge. He taught anthropology and sociology at the University of Glasgow from 1975 to 1982, and in Papua New Guinea from 1983 to 1994. Colin managed the University of Papua New Guinea's business arm, Unisearch PNG, from 1991 to 1994. He served as the head of the Social Environmental Studies Division at the Papua New Guinea National Research Institute from 1995 to 2000. Additionally, from 2001 to 2012, he was the Convenor of the Resource Management Asia-Pacific Program at the College of Asia and the Pacific, and is a member of the Resources, Environment and Development group at Crawford School. His career highlights include being a member of the WWF Australia Scientific Advisory Committee (2002–2007), the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Sub-Global Working Group (2002–2004), and the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Project Assurance Group (2001–2002). He contributed to the Papua New Guinea National Economic Fiscal Commission (1998–1999) and was part of the Papua New Guinea National Forestry Conservation Action Program Steering Committee (1990–1992).
