Biography

Colin Mitchell is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Dalhousie University, where he also serves as the Department Chair and Director of the Minor in Middle East Studies. He completed his BA at the University of Regina, his MA at McGill University in Islamic Studies, and earned his PhD in History from the University of Toronto in 2002. His teaching primarily focuses on medieval Islamic civilization and ancient medieval Iran. Mitchell's research interests center around the history of Safavid Iran (1501-1722), where he investigates the interaction of court politics, literature, and religion. He has authored and edited several significant publications including 'New Perspectives on Safavid Iran: Empire and Society' and 'Practice of Politics in Safavid Iran: Power, Religion, Rhetoric.' His research also explores princely succession practices in early modern Islamicate societies and the iconography in Persianate literary and religious culture during the medieval to early modern periods.
