Dr. Colin Phillips

Biography

Colin Phillips is a professor of linguistics at the University of Oxford, holding a professorial fellowship at Somerville College. He serves as the Faculty Board Chair in the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics. Over the past 25 years, Professor Phillips has been an advocate for building connections across diverse areas of language study under the umbrella of Language Science. He is committed to promoting interdisciplinary language research, focusing on education and engineering. Originally from the UK, he has spent 33 years in the United States, particularly associated with the University of Maryland. His research group collaborates with researchers in both Oxford and Maryland, working on projects that extend across multiple locations. Professor Phillips has a keen interest in preparing students for interdisciplinary research and diverse career pathways, and he is passionate about communicating the nuances of language science to broader audiences. He completed his undergraduate studies with a focus on medieval German at the University of Oxford.
