Biography

Colin Rennie (Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 2002, P.Eng.) is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa. His expertise lies in river engineering, environmental hydraulics, sediment transport, turbulence, and aquatic habitat. Professor Rennie’s research primarily focuses on channel morphodynamics and mixing processes, employing high-resolution field measurements, acoustic instruments, laboratory physical models, and three-dimensional numerical modeling. He addresses problems associated with bed and bank stability, river ice processes, river corridor restoration, and aquatic ecosystem protection. His recent work examines river flooding, influenced by significant events such as the 2013 Alberta flood and the Ottawa River floods in 2017 and 2019. Internationally recognized for his research in morphodynamic processes, he has collaborated with institutions in New Zealand, Switzerland, Spain, and China. His collaborative projects often include extensive field measurement campaigns. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (ASCE) and is an active member of various technical committees, including those from CSCE, ASCE, and IAHR.
