Biography

Colin Selman earned his BSc Honours degree in Zoology from the University of Glasgow and a PhD in avian ecophysiology from Durham University. His research initially focused on metabolic changes in the migration of the Red knot (Calidris canutus), followed by field studies in Gambia on pregnancy and malaria mosquito exposure. He further explored whole-animal physiology during a postdoctoral position at Aberdeen, studying the relationship between metabolic rate and aging. Subsequent postdoctoral work at the University of Florida examined the effects of voluntary exercise on mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and lifespan. He completed his postdoctoral research at Imperial College/UCL, investigating the effects of dietary restriction and targeted mutations in nutrient sensing pathways like insulin/IGF-1 and mTOR on organismal aging. In 2007, he accepted a lectureship at Aberdeen University and returned to Glasgow in 2013 as a Professor of Biogerontology. Professor Selman's research interests encompass Aging, dietary restriction, insulin/IGF-1 signaling, mTOR signaling, mitochondria, and frailty.
