Biography

Dr. Colleen Carney specializes in the study of sleep and mood disorders, notably major depressive disorder and insomnia disorder. She serves as a Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University and is the Director of the Sleep and Depression (SAD) Laboratory. Additionally, Dr. Carney is the President of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Special Interest Group of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. Her research has received funding from esteemed organizations including the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute of Nursing Research, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The current focus of the SAD Lab is on the relationship between cognition, fatigue, and sleep across various psychiatric and medical populations. Dr. Carney’s specific research interests include cognitive vulnerability to insomnia and depression, the etiological role of insomnia in depression, fatigue management, and the interplay between sleep and fatigue. Her students engage in clinical research assessing sleep disorders and employing behavioral sleep medicine techniques. Moreover, Dr. Carney has delivered over 100 training workshops worldwide on cognitive behavioral treatments for insomnia and depression and has authored 100 publications, including 12 books on insomnia treatment.
