Biography

Colleen McDowell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Cell & Molecular Biology/Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2004 and completed her PhD in Molecular Physiology & Biophysics at the University of Iowa in 2009. Following her doctoral studies, she undertook postdoctoral training in Visual Sciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, which she completed in 2013. Dr. McDowell's research focuses on the development and regulation of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and its effects on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival and optic nerve head (ONH) damage. Her laboratory employs primary human and mouse optic nerve head cells, including astrocytes, RGCs, and trabecular meshwork (TM) cells, cultivated under various conditions. Her research also utilizes multiple mouse model systems of ocular hypertension and glaucoma, along with a perfusion organ culture system using human donor eyes to further explore the relation between pressure and RGC survival associated with trabecular meshwork dysfunction.
