Biography

Professor Conceição Bettencourt leads a dynamic collaborative research group focused on epigenetics and neurodegenerative diseases. She is the leader of the Genetics Omics Working Group within the Deep Dementia Phenotyping (DEMON) Network, a global platform for innovation in dementia research using data science and artificial intelligence. Conceição received her PhD in Human Genetics from the University of the Azores in 2010. During her postdoctoral career, she worked in laboratories across multiple countries, honing her skills in neurogenetics, genomics, epigenomics, and bioinformatics. She has successfully secured independent research funding, including a prestigious Senior Fellowship from Alzheimer’s Research UK, which enabled her to grow her own research team. Her research focuses on utilizing multi-omics data and epigenomics and transcriptomics derived from human post-mortem brain tissue and blood to achieve a deeper understanding of the molecular pathways disrupted in biological ageing, neurodegenerative diseases, and dementias. Additionally, Conceição is a dedicated mentor, passionate about helping others develop their careers. She leads the ION-EDI Career Development group, fostering inclusive career development opportunities and recognition for her commitment to development; she received the UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences "Contribution to EDI Practice" Award in 2025.
