Biography

Connie Bloomfield-Gadelha is a lecturer in Liberal Arts with a focus on Classics, Ancient History, and Classical Studies. Her research interests center around the grassroots receptions of ancient cultures and how communities forge connections with the past. Her interdisciplinary work blends approaches from Classics, Anthropology, Modern Languages, and Performance Studies. Connie is currently working on a monograph concerning the receptions of Graeco-Roman antiquity in the popular oral poetries of Northeast Brazil, investigating the rich heritage of cantadores in the region, who are the inheritors of African indigenous oralities and the troubadour traditions introduced to Brazil in the 16th century. Her studies reveal the complexities and political functions of Northeast-Brazilian popular poetry within the context of transatlantic history, challenging models of classical reception and the mediation of antiquity in Early Modernity. Along with co-editing a volume on Ancient Greek Literature for Oxford University Press and contributing a chapter on the political creation of poetic temporalities, Connie has translated works and coordinated events aimed at fostering relationships between contemporary poetry and visual art.
