Biography

Conrad Zapanta earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on biomedical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1991 and a Ph.D. in bioengineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1997. He has served as a visiting professor at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, and has been a faculty member at Penn State, where he focused on research related to cardiac assist devices suitable for smaller adults and children. Zapanta joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University in 2006, where he taught laboratory and design classes. He served as the associate department head for education in the Biomedical Engineering department from 2009 to 2022, overseeing multiple phases of the biomedical engineering curriculum. His research interests include cardiovascular medical devices and biomedical engineering education. He has held leadership roles within the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) and has served as a reviewer for various biomedical engineering journals and NIH panels. He is a Fellow of both the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
