Professor Constantin Coussios was elected to the Statutory Chair of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford in 2011, with a special responsibility for drug delivery and therapeutic devices. He received his BA, MEng, and PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and has been part of Oxford's biomedical engineering faculty since 2004. He founded and leads the Biomedical Ultrasonics, Biotherapy and Biopharmaceuticals Laboratory (BUBBL), which has over 50 researchers based in the Botnar Research Centre. His leadership as Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering spanned from 2016 to 2025. During this period, he led the £11 million Oxford Centre for Drug Delivery Devices, aimed at improving oncological drug delivery through collaboration with the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Notable achievements include leading the first-in-human trial of ultrasound-triggered targeted drug delivery for liver tumors. He has also co-founded multiple ventures including OrganOx Ltd., which focuses on organ preservation technologies. Recognized for his contributions to medical acoustics, Coussios has received numerous awards, including the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal and an OBE for services to biomedical engineering.
