Dr. Constanze Güthenke

Biography

Constanze Güthenke is an accomplished scholar in the field of Classics, with particular expertise in Greek Literature and the reception of antiquity in modern contexts. She earned her BA with honors from the University of Cambridge, followed by an MPhil and DPhil from the same institution and Oxford, respectively. Güthenke has previously taught at Princeton University’s Classics Department for twelve years, contributing to their Program in Hellenic Studies. Her primary research interests encompass the critical histories of scholarship, examining how classicists question their discipline and the implications of these inquiries. She has published significant works, including a monograph on literary representations of contemporary Greece and another addressing the rhetorical strategies in German scholarship on antiquity. Additionally, Güthenke is a founding member of the Postclassicisms collective and serves as the editor-in-chief of the Classical Receptions Journal, published by Oxford University Press. Currently, her research engages with the transnational aspects of scholarship and the migration of classical knowledge across various contexts, especially between Europe and America. She teaches a broad spectrum of topics within Greek literature and has supervised dissertations on diverse subjects related to philology and classical reception.
