Dr. Consuelo Martinez Reyes

Biography

Consuelo Martinez Reyes is a Lecturer in Spanish Latin American Studies at Macquarie University. Her research focuses on the representation of gender, sexuality, and national sentiments in Hispanic Caribbean literature and cinema. A writer, translator, and editor, she authored the short story collection 'En blanco' (2018) which was published in English as 'Blank Canvases' (2021). Her upcoming monograph, 'Queer Women in the Hispanic Caribbean' (2025), investigates the historical invisibility of lesbianism in the literary and cinematic canon of the region. This work aims to document the lives and love of female characters who identify as lesbian, thus expanding the representation of alternative sexualities in Caribbean literature. Currently, she is collaborating on a book project titled 'Affective Decolonization: Spanish Caribbean Women and the Development of Contemporary National Discourses', which examines the roles women play in shaping national ideologies through emotional leadership. Both projects highlight the intersection of politics, gender, and sexuality as a means to address socio-cultural and political violence in colonized areas. Additionally, she explores the implications of decolonial thinking in Puerto Rican literature, particularly its portrayal in the context of the island's relationship with the United States.
