Dr. Corene Hurt Thaut

Biography

Corene Hurt-Thaut received her Master's degree in music therapy and Ph.D. with an interdisciplinary focus on music, neuroscience, and statistical design from Colorado State University. She served as Special Assistant Professor in Music Therapy from 1997 to 2014, teaching classes in piano technique, music therapy methods for counseling psychiatric populations, and neuro-rehabilitation techniques. Her research areas include music therapy, advanced techniques in neurologic rehabilitation, and seminars on neurologic music therapy. Additionally, she has held the position of Research Associate at the Center for Biomedical Research in Music at Colorado State University from 1997 to 2015 and has served as the director of international training programs for the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy since 1999. With 3.5 years of clinical experience as a music therapist at Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital and 4 years as a Neurologic Music Therapist at Poudre Valley Hospital, her work encompasses a diverse range of clinical populations, including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Hurt-Thaut has served on the exam committee of the National Certification Board for Music Therapy and was the committee chair from 2001 to 2006. She has numerous research publications in the area of music and motor control, including ten book chapters that highlight specific applications of neurologic music therapy.
