Corey McAleese is a Research Assistant at the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health at the University of Glasgow. He completed his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh before pursuing a Master of Science in Experimental Medicine at Queen’s University Belfast, focusing on cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Currently, he is in a 4-Year PhD program at SCMH, under the supervision of Professors James Leiper and John Petrie and Dr. Laura Dowsett. His PhD research investigates the heterogeneity of endothelial cell metabolism and its role in the development of diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications. Furthermore, he explores the prognostic potential of retinal vascular geometric parameters in relation to cardiovascular disease risk in type 1 diabetes. In his current position, starting September 2024, he will be working with Dr. Craig Lygate to investigate cellular energy metabolism and its implications for cardiac health and disease, particularly the regulation of the creatine kinase system in ischaemic heart conditions and the mechanistic role of homoarginine in regulating cardiac function.
