Biography

Corey Van de Waal is a Continuing Lecturer at the University of Waterloo's Department of Economics. He was born and raised in Woodstock, Ontario, and comes from a family of seven children. After completing secondary school, he worked as an industrial baker for over a decade before deciding to pursue a new career in economics. In 1999, he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo at nearly thirty-one years of age, where he experienced the benefits of applying classroom knowledge in a workplace setting as an economics co-op student. He continued with graduate studies in economics at Waterloo, specializing in public policy and microeconomic theory. His passion for teaching was ignited when he was given the opportunity to teach ECON 201 during his graduate studies in 2006. Since then, he has taught microeconomics at various levels and initiated the ECON Clinic to assist students in foundational economics courses. Van de Waal has also served as an Undergraduate Advisor and introduced a new course on the economics of sport into the curriculum.
