Cory Thorne Gutiérrez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland, cross-appointed with the School of Music. He earned his Ph.D. in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004, where his dissertation focused on the community and identity within Newfoundland expatriate culture. His primary research interests include queer vernacular theory, underground economies, popular culture and music, critical regionalism, and material culture. Thorne Gutiérrez has conducted ethnographic research related to LGBTQ+ communities, including ongoing investigations of a 'gay ranch' in Havana, Cuba. He has previously concentrated on associations of the Newfoundland expatriate community, undertaking fieldwork in various locations including Newfoundland, Alberta, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has served as past president of the Folklore Studies Association of Canada and currently convenes the LGBTQ Allies Section of the American Folklore Society.
