Biography

Cory Reed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on genre performance in early modern drama and the representation of identity in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature. Reed explores the literary and cultural responses to the emergence of scientific discourse in early modern Spain through cognitive cultural studies. He is the author of numerous journal articles and is currently finishing a book entitled 'Cervantes Aesthetic Instrumentality: Science, Technology, Agency in Don Quijote'. Additionally, Reed has begun new research projects on utopia and performance in early modern Spanish drama, as well as cognitive approaches to early modern literature and culture. He serves on the executive council of the Cervantes Society of America and acts as Communications Director, representing the University of Texas on the Representative Council of the Newberry Renaissance Consortium. Reed has a robust academic background, including directing the interdisciplinary Tracking Cultures Program, which analyzes the historical roots of Southwestern colonial Mexico and early modern Spain.
