Biography

Cory Zurell is a Lecturer in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo, where he supports the Architectural Engineering program. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario and Nova Scotia and serves as Principal at Blackwell Structural Engineers. Dr. Zurell has extensive experience in building design and bridge design and has been involved in award-winning architectural engineering projects. He has a strong background with a variety of structural materials, particularly timber design, and has lectured at industry events about adaptive reuse of historic buildings and the use of heavy mass timber in large, non-residential buildings. Before joining the University of Waterloo full-time, Dr. Zurell spent ten years as an adjunct instructor teaching structural design courses to architecture and engineering students at both the University of Waterloo and Laurentian University’s School of Architecture. He is an associate member of the Technical Committee CSA S6 related to the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and chairs the Timber Design Sub-committee. Additionally, he is a member of the committee for the APA/ANSI PRG-320 standard on Cross-Laminated Timber.
