Biography

Cory Zurell is an Associate Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Waterloo, specializing in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He has extensive experience in building design and bridge design, contributing to award-winning architectural engineering projects. As a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario, he is particularly proficient in timber design and has lectured on the adaptive reuse of historic buildings using heavy and mass timber in large non-residential structures. Prior to his full-time position at the University of Waterloo, he served as an adjunct instructor for ten years, teaching structural design courses to architecture and engineering students at Laurentian University's School of Architecture. He is a member of the Technical Committee CSA S6, which pertains to the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, and chairs the Timber Design Sub-committee. Zurell has an active research program and is open to accepting graduate students, focusing on various aspects of structural engineering and design.
