Biography

Costas P. Grigoropoulos received his Diploma Degrees in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1978 and in Mechanical Engineering in 1980 from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He later earned an M.Sc. degree in 1983 and a Ph.D. in 1986 in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. Grigoropoulos joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley as an Assistant Professor in 1990, having served as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington from 1986 to 1990. He was promoted to Associate Professor in July 1993 and then to Professor in July 1997. His research primarily revolves around laser materials processing, including micro/nano-machining, flexible electronics fabrication, energy conversion devices, and the characterization of micro/nanofluidic transport. He has been involved in significant research roles at facilities such as the Xerox Mechanical Engineering Sciences Laboratory and the IBM Almaden Research Center. Grigoropoulos also serves as a Faculty Staff Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Environmental Energy Technologies Division.
