Courtney D. Cogburn is an Associate Professor of Social Work at the Columbia University School of Social Work, where she employs a transdisciplinary approach to examine the role of racism in the production of racial inequalities in health. She is affiliated with the Columbia Population Research Center and co-chairs the Computational Social Science Working Group. Her research interests focus on characterizing and measuring the effects of racism on health disparities, particularly the acute physiological, psychological, and behavioral stress responses associated with chronic psychosocial stress exposure and cardiovascular health disparities between Black and White populations. Dr. Cogburn is developing a project to explore links between media-based racism and population health using data science methods. She is the lead creator of the immersive virtual reality experience "1000 Cut Journey," which examines racism and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2018. Prior to her role at Columbia, she was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholar at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. Dr. Cogburn holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Virginia, an MSW from the University of Michigan School of Social Work, and a PhD in Combined Program in Education and Psychology from the University of Michigan.
