Biography

Courtney Gardner is an assistant professor in environmental engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. She arrived in Austin from her position as a faculty member in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Washington State University. Gardner obtained her Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from Duke University, where her research focused on evaluating the contribution of genetically engineered crops to environmental antibiotic resistance in wastewater treatment and agricultural systems. Her academic journey also includes an M.S. in civil and environmental engineering from Duke University, and a B.S. in biology from Stetson University. Gardner’s research interests lie in using principles of molecular biotechnology and biogeochemistry within environmental engineering to understand and predict how external stressors alter the structure and function of microbial communities in both natural and engineered systems.
