Biography

Courtney Szto is an Associate Professor at the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, Queen's University. Her research predominantly explores the relationship between physical cultures and intersectional justice, focusing on issues such as racism, sexism, and ableism amidst climate catastrophe. Szto's doctoral research culminated in the publication of "Changing Fly: Hockey Voices of South Asian Canadians" in 2020, which received the Outstanding Book Award from the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport. Additionally, she executive produced the short documentary "Revolutions" which addresses bike waste and won recognition at the BC Environmental Film Festival. Currently, she collaborates on an SSHRC Insight Grant aimed at helping historically marginalized groups and fostering community around anti-colonial outdoor activities. Szto is interested in supervising graduate students in various fields, including media studies, anti-racism, environmental justice, and athlete activism. Her work contributes significantly to understanding the impact of sports and physical activities on social justice movements.
