Biography

Courtney S. Thomas Tobin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences and serves as the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. A trained medical sociologist, Dr. Thomas Tobin's research focuses on the biopsychosocial pathways to health and longevity among Black Americans. By integrating traditional sociological theories with perspectives from public health, social psychology, and biological sciences, she explores the causes and consequences of long-standing Black-White health disparities. Dr. Thomas Tobin employs both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate how racial minority status influences health outcomes throughout the life course. Her program of research contributes to several areas of inquiry, including psychosocial pathways to health, health risks and resources affecting life course, and coping mechanisms in the context of racialized stress among Black Americans.
