Biography

Craig Cumming completed his PhD in Public Health at the School of Population and Global Health, University of Western Australia in 2024. He holds a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours and a Bachelor of Criminology and Justice from Edith Cowan University. His research primarily focuses on addressing mental health and substance use problems in marginalized groups, including individuals moving through the justice system and those experiencing homelessness. Cumming's PhD work investigated the World Health Organization's Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) as a tool for identifying individuals at risk of drug-related harm upon release from incarceration. His current research examines the drivers of poor mental health outcomes related to self-harm and missed opportunities for early intervention across multiple sectors. Moreover, he has consulted for the West Australian Department of Justice on prison health intervention evaluations and collaborated with the Cancer Council of Western Australia on research related to surgery costs and smoking. Cumming has also contributed evidence to various inquiries regarding drug use disorders and has expertise relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
