Biography

Receiving his doctoral degree in Physics from Rutgers University in 2006, Craig Fennie spent years at the Center for Nanoscale Materials at Argonne National Laboratory as a Nicholas Metropolis Fellow. He joined the Cornell faculty in July 2008 and works in the broad area of computational and theoretical materials physics, focusing on Materials-by-Design. Fennie has received various prestigious awards including the 2010 Young Investigator Award from the Army Research Office, the 2011 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation, the 2012 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and the 2015 MacArthur Fellowship. In 2015, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society. His research interests lie at the intersection of condensed matter and materials physics and solid state chemistry, particularly in understanding how composition, symmetry, geometry, and topology of crystalline motifs influence the active degrees-of-freedom that manifest macroscopic properties, which he aims to exploit for targeted functionalities through first-principles simulations and atomic-scale modeling.
