Dr. Craig Haifer

Biography

Craig Haifer is a Conjoint Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, affiliated with the School of Clinical Medicine. He is also a Staff Specialist in Gastroenterology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. His clinical expertise lies in managing Inflammatory Bowel Disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as microbial manipulation techniques such as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Dr. Haifer has a significant interest in the role of the gut microbiome in the development of gastrointestinal and systemic diseases. He completed his PhD at the University of Sydney, where he assessed the effectiveness of fecal microbiota transplantation in treating gastrointestinal diseases. In addition to his clinical work, he is actively involved in research, particularly in expanding the applications of FMT beyond gastrointestinal diseases to fields like oncology and hematology. Dr. Haifer has obtained $2 million in research funding from organizations including the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and NSW Health and has a proven track record with successful research projects, publishing in high-ranking journals such as Lancet: Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Gut. He is dedicated to mentoring students and has been involved in supervising Honours and PhD candidates in his research initiatives.
