Craig Mandato is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University. His research focuses on the role of cytoskeletal components in cell division, motility, and wound healing. The Mandato lab is particularly interested in the processes of cytokinesis in eukaryotic cells, specifically the mechanisms that lead to aberrant cytokinesis, which can result in aneuploidy— a leading cause of spontaneous miscarriages and a hallmark of many human cancers. The lab investigates the contractile ring in animal cell cytokinesis, composed of actin filaments and myosin-2, and explores how these structures generate the forces necessary for fission events. In addition, the lab studies how microtubules play a critical role in directing the assembly of the contractile ring. Understanding these cellular functions is essential for both normal and pathological human physiology. To address these complex issues, the Mandato lab employs a variety of methodological approaches, including cell biological techniques and in vivo studies using frog models.
