Dr. Craig Miller

Biography

D. Craig Miller is the Thelma Henry Doelger Professor Emeritus of Cardiovascular Surgery at Stanford University. His research and scholarship primarily focus on cardiac heart valve disease, with extensive experimental laboratory projects involving large animals. His work emphasizes the investigation of left ventricular cardiac mechanics, bioenergetics, and mitral valve physiology. Miller leads research aimed at understanding the complexities of mitral valve subvalvular apparatus and left ventricular wall strains. Clinically, his interests extend to thoracic aortic diseases, including aortic dissection and aneurysm repair, as well as surgical and endovascular treatments, specifically involving mitral valve repair and valve-sparing aortic root replacement. He has received numerous awards, including the J.E. Wallace Sterling Lifetime Achievement Award from the Stanford Medicine Alumni Association in 2021 and has served as the President of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS) from 2007 to 2008. Additionally, he has been recognized as a Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association (2003) and has received the Eugene Braunwald Mentorship Award from the same organization in 2009. His contributions to the field have established him as a leading figure in cardiovascular surgery and research.
