Dr. Craig Scott

Biography

Craig R. Scott is the Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds the John T. Jones, Jr. Centennial Professorship and serves as a Senior Faculty Research Associate at the Center for Media Engagement within the Moody College of Communication. Scott's academic career includes a previous stint at UT Austin from 1995 to 2006, followed by 14 years at Rutgers University. His research primarily explores organizational communication, focusing on issues related to anonymity, identity, and identification within various organizational settings. His current interests center on 'hidden organizations,' where he examines how organizations and their members conceal significant aspects of their identity from audiences. His 2013 book, titled 'Anonymous Agencies, Backstreet Businesses, Covert Collectives: Rethinking Organizations in the 21st Century,' has received multiple awards. In 2023, Scott was selected as a Fellow of the International Communication Association, and in 2021, he received the Jablin Award for Outstanding Contributions to Organizational Communication. He is also a co-editor of the International Encyclopedia of Organizational Communication and sits on the editorial boards of several communication journals. In addition to his administrative and research responsibilities, Scott teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on Organizational Communication and Work & Technology. Beyond academia, Scott enjoys cheering for Colorado and Denver sports teams and engaging in activities such as basketball, sand volleyball, and trivia.
