Biography

Dr. Craig R. Smith earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed his general surgery and vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He joined the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1984 after finishing his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Smith has served as Director of Cardiopulmonary Transplantation and became Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1996. He was appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery in 2010 and has become a full professor in 1998. His research interests include mitral valve repair, outcomes of heart-lung transplantation, and adaptation in cardiac transplantation. He has been recognized as a top doctor by New York Magazine from 2015-2016 and received the Practitioner of the Year Award in 2004 from the Society of Practitioners at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. He has involvement in multicenter studies like the PARTNER aortic transcatheter valve trial and has extensive expertise in adult congenital heart disease, cardiac surgery, and valve repairs.
